Ammonite · Fossilised Cephalopod
Crystallised Ammonite
A fossilised ammonite whose shell has recrystallised into a deep amber, glass-like finish — the outer whorls glowing gold and mahogany under light, while the central umbilicus stays pale and chalky where the original shell wall was thinnest. Ammonites were free-swimming cephalopods, closer relatives of squid and octopus than of true snails, that built their coiled shells one growing chamber at a time.
Interesting fact
The spiral chambers of an ammonite shell follow a logarithmic growth curve so precise that the same mathematics describes nautilus shells, hurricanes and spiral galaxies — and each vacated chamber was pumped with gas and used for buoyancy control, effectively making the ammonite its own submarine.
