Mineral · Colour-Zoned Halide

Fluorite

A raw block of fluorite displaying dramatic colour zoning — bands of violet, green and blue running through the crystal along its natural cubic cleavage planes, the fractured faces catching light like cut glass.

Fluorite is the mineral that gave the word "fluorescence" to the English language — many specimens glow vividly blue or purple under ultraviolet light due to trace impurities, a phenomenon first scientifically described from fluorite itself by physicist George Gabriel Stokes in 1852.

Sourced from China — the world's leading producer of fluorite, whose major deposits are prized for exactly this kind of vivid, multi-coloured banding.
